Wenzhou-Kean University (WKU), located in Wenzhou, China, is one of three Chinese-American universities along with NYU Shanghai and Duke Kunshan University. Launched in 2012, WKU offers a unique higher education model in partnership with Kean University, a comprehensive public university in the state of New Jersey. WKU is approved by the Ministry of Education of China and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. WKU sits on approximately 500 beautiful acres and currently enrolls 4,200 students, and is now in the midst of rapid growth that will bring enrollment to 7,000 students over the next five years. All instructions are in English and all programs are provided by Kean University. In addition to its current 18 undergraduate programs, WKU has been approved by the Ministry of Education to offer 8 master’s programs and 3 doctoral programs. Wenzhou is one of the most dynamic and economically developed cities on China’s east coast, located one hour by plane and just over three hours by high-speed train from Shanghai.

About the position:

WKU’s College of Architecture and Design is looking for dynamic candidates to teach undergraduate studio courses and lecture courses in the Professional Industrial Design program in one or more of the following areas: 3D technologies, modeling, methods of production, materials and finish, parametric design. Candidates with work experience and knowledge of vehicle design is preferred. Additional experience in household products, furniture, sustainable design, space-saving products, toys, pharmaceuticals and point of sale is desirable. In addition to teaching and/or research, faculty are expected to spend non-teaching hours advising and providing other student support services, primarily mentoring and job placement. The ideal candidate will contribute intellectually to the formation of this professional program by developing research and/or creative scholarship that may include peer-reviewed publications, competitive creative work, scholarly presentations, and grade-appropriate sponsored projects. academic assistant; participate in innovative teaching and curriculum development; and actively engage in professional organizations.

All faculty positions are full-time assignments, effective for the start of the Spring 2023 or Fall 2023 semester. Positions are renewed every three years.

A Lecturer is an 11-month full-time employee who teaches 39 credits per year and provides student and learning support services during the assigned period. Lecturers will be expected to provide high quality instruction, student counseling, learning support services, and service to the university/college/school/program and/or professional community; and perform related work as required. Lecturer positions are not tenure-track and may be renewed annually.

A tenure-track Assistant Professor is a 10-month full-time employee who teaches 24 credits per academic year (course release is available for grant proposal development and other major research initiatives). The candidate will be expected to participate in all faculty responsibilities, including high quality teaching, research, advising; student learning support; service to the university/college/school/program and/or professional community. Tenure-track appointments require high-quality articles in internationally recognized and peer-reviewed journals, book publications in university presses, scholarly presentation conferences/seminars, curatorial grants, and invitations to exhibitions, prestigious international design awards and other scholarly contributions and creative output.

Teaching assignments and related responsibilities may include daytime, evening, weekend, and online classes. Interest or experience in using advanced instructional technologies to enhance the teaching/learning process is highly desirable. All faculty may be required to teach general education courses as needed. Opportunities are also available to teach disciplinary support courses. A terminal diploma is required for positions leading to tenure in design. One of the degrees must be in industrial/product design or a closely related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered a substitute for a master’s degree, as determined by the University. Applicant must have a proven record of professional work and/or academic scholarship. A minimum of one year of teaching experience at the post-secondary level and fluency in English are required for all positions. A terminal degree from a prestigious design school or teaching/professional experience in recognized institutions or companies is preferred.

The faculty positions at WKU offer:

  • Annual salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $65,000 to $68,000 for lecturers; $66,000 to $75,000 for assistant professors. The salary of extraordinary candidates will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
